About Carson Manufacturing
HOW A US FIRM INNOVATED THE BEST PLANETARY GEARHEAD DESIGN
This is the redesign that changed planetary gearheads forever
More than 25 years ago, Carson Manufacturing set a new industry standard by redesigning and revolutionizing the design of planetary gearheads. In the following more than two decades, so many other companies have followed in their path that the method is now standard.
However, this family-owned company based in Nevada was the first to reconfigure the structure of a planetary gear to deliver a quality product that lasts longer, costs less, and outperforms the competition.
So, how did they do it?
By using a bearing holder rather than a housing, the Carson design creates a concentric force along the centerline of the device, which aligns the gears more effectively and ensures optimum manufacturing.
When the company implemented that design change in 1996, it was the result of three-generations working together: Eddie Capps, who purchased the company with his wife, Barbara, their daughter, Delores Stacy, now Carson Manufacturing’s vice president, and her son, Kenny Penn, the sales engineer. This family-owned company continues to work with an expert team of individuals, many who have been with the company for 20+ years.
Today, Carson Manufacturing continues to innovate and strive for excellence. Its team of engineers, machinists, and assemblers are a significant contributor to improving planetary gearhead technology.
After 48 years of operations, the company is well-known, a leading manufacturer of planetary gearheads. And, of course, the innovation didn’t stop in 1996.
The company has its own internal research and development division where new the design of planetary gears is improved upon and ultimately perfected.
In fact, the company can engineer planetary gearheads to mount practically any motor for any ratio, configuration and size.
Additionally, because Carson Manufacturing understands how important it is to have the right part engineered correctly, they support their clients by not charging a design fee for custom planetary gearheads, which no other planetary gearhead company does.
Whether the company is researching new ground-breaking technology or improving on current products, each design is strenuously tested under multitudes of conditions, technical specifications, and requirements.

Different planetary gearhead systems designed for different needs
As a result of this commitment to improvement and excellence, Carson Manufacturing has continued to evolve its line of planetary gearheads, including:
Precision Series Planetary Gearheads
The Precision Series is Carson’s high-end line of planetary gearheads designed for the most strenuous applications. The Precision Series is made in sizes 17, 23, 34, 42 & 56 with standard ratios from 3:1 to 100:1; however, Carson can produce ratios up to 10,000:1. The Cadillac of Carson’s planetary gearboxes, the Precision Series features a dynamic radial shaft seal at the input and output and an enclosure rating of IP65. The operating temperature ranges from -20°F to 250°F.

Eliminator Series Planetary Gears
The design that changed it all was the Eliminator Series, Carson’s affordable high-end line of planetary gearheads designed for strenuous applications. The Eliminator series shares many of the same features with the Precision Series but comes in sizes 17, 23, and 34 with standard ratios from 3:1 to 100:1. The firm can also produce ratios up to 10,000:1.
“S” Series Planetary Gearheads
The “S” Series is Carson’s most economical line of planetary gearheads designed for light-duty applications. However, it still delivers the same quality and reliability that Carson promises of all its planetary gearheads. The “S” Series comes in sizes 17, 23, and 34, with standard ratios from 4:1 to 100:1, with custom rations available up to 10,000:1. The “S” Series features an IP54 enclosure rating.
Right Angle Series Planetary Gears
Carson offers two lines of right angle planetary gearheads: the Right Angle Eliminator (RE) and the Right Angle Precision (RP). The Right Angle Eliminator comes in sizes 17, 23, and 34, while the Right Angle Precision comes in sizes 17, 23, 34, 42, and 56. Both have standard ratios from 3:1 to 100:1, and custom ratios can go up to 10,000:1. Both lines of right-angle series planetary gears include the same features, an enclosure rating of IP65, an operating temperature range of -20°F to 250°F, and hardened steel spiral miter gears.
Custom Designed Planetary Gearheads
From slight modifications in existing designs to complete custom gearheads built-to-suit, Carson helps clients around the world engineer and develop the planetary gearhead specific to a project. From gearheads that help detect cancer and other diseases to those that improve the production of paper, the breadth and depth of Carson’s development capabilities are impressive.
Behind each gear is a team committed to delivering total customer satisfaction while staying on-time and on-budget.
